The beginning of blueberry season is a great excuse to take a trip up the beautiful McKenzie Valley. So we did. Here we arrive at the blueberry you-pick outside Leaburg. |
| Picking blueberries. The farmer cautions us that it's early in the season and there aren't many ripe blueberries yet, but we find lots. Some hang in clusters like grapes. And Cade's berry-picking skills have improved since last year. |

Our basket full of blueberries, the equivalent of two good-sized buckets. These are no-spray berries, and the prices are nothing like in the supermarkets; here they're just $1.50/lb... unless you pick more than 50 pounds, in which case you get a discount! |
| Waiting for our buckets to be weighed on the old-fashioned scale at the farm stand. |

Afterward we continued a few miles up the highway to Leaburg Lake with its beautiful, quiet park, where we went down woodsy trails to the water's edge and ate our lunch. |
| Heading back from the lake's edge after lunch, and on to the ponds at the adjacent fish hatchery. The forest was filled with the wonderful sweet scent of warm Douglas fir. |
