To Brownsville and Beyond - 4

Shoot Date: 10-1-2009

Leaving Brownsville (remember, I was on my way to Lebanon), I followed the road up and down along a set of hills until suddenly, coming around a turn, I spotted this old one-room schoolhouse.  Although I wasn't able to capture it, the setting was beautiful, with the school nestled in the shade of the surrounding hills, while almost immediately beyond the building the land drops away dramatically into the sunny Willamette Valley, with views of the Coast Range mountains in the background.

A close-up of Rock Hill School, the last of five schools so named which served this area.  This final one was built in 1910 and closed in 1935.  I was surprised, surfing around the Net, to come across a picture of it taken some years later where it appeared bereft of paint and with horses grazing at the back.  But the building has been restored, thanks to local volunteers who banded together to save it.

Side view of Rock Hill School, where you can see the figures of people painted in the windows.  A lot of fascinating information about the school and local life in the late 1800s and early 1900s can be found here.

Beyond the back of the school, the hillside drops away to offer this view of the valley below.
In the background, birds sing and a breeze whispers past you in the quiet.  Needless to say,
I was very glad I decided to leave the freeway behind and explore the back roads on this trip.
