Autumn along the McKenzie

Shoot Date: 10-18-2006

Always water: the edge of Leaburg Lake, created by a hydroelectric dam on the river which is run by EWEB, the Eugene utility company.  The highway separates the mountainside from its mirrored reflection.

The bright overcast sky and contrasting darkness of the lake and trees wreaked havoc on the lighting in this picture, but I liked the effect anyway.  A lone yellow-leafed tree stands out on the southern edge of Leaburg Lake, between Leaburg and Vida.  These little towns are, by the way, just that: Leaburg has under 900 residents; Vida around 1100.  Neither has any sort of town center; they're just places you pass through along Highway 126, with a convenience store, a couple of restaurants and maybe a tiny post office to mark the place.

Goodpasture bridge near Vida, one of 20 covered bridges in Lane County.  They're not particularly old--built in the 1930s and '40s--but they definitely add a photogenic touch to the local area.

Stark interior of the Goodpasture bridge with its rows of louvered windows.

Goodpasture bridge as seen from the edge of the McKenzie River.  Fishermen often dot the riverbanks, or cast their lines from the bowed-hull drift boats that were developed specifically to navigate this river.
