Rowboats wait to be rented at the Clear Lake dock. Note the turquoise
color of the water beyond the boats. Some people look down and suppose,
because of the water's clarity, that
the water is only a few feet deep where the actual depth is closer to
15'.

Looking
down the length of the lake, which meanders for several miles. No
motorized boats are allowed here, so the air is quiet, broken only by the
quiet slap of oars. |

Hiking trails circle the lake, taking the
visitor through the domain of Douglas fir and redwood, with the occasional
stream crossing the trail on its way into the lake. Here, Ben and Paul
stop to talk at trailside.

Deciduous trees spread their leafy umbrellas
between the taller conifers, their leaves catching the sunlight and making
them stand out like so many enchanted things. |

Beside
the small lodge and restaurant, I sit and watch as rowboats and canoes come
and go. This is a low-key place, and has a quiet charm that seems
almost from the past. Cabins are available with advanced reservations;
you can choose between 'modern' (with bathroom) and 'rustic' (without, but
with access to shower and toilet facilities.) Power is provided by a
central generator that runs from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. After that it's
quite literally 'lights out'. |
