Trek to Florence and
Heceta Head Lighthouse

Shoot Date: 8-26-2006

The Siuslaw meanders toward the sea, widening as it flows past open land, the edges of forest and houses owned by people who live in tune with flowing water, boats bobbing at docks below their back doors.   As the river nears Florence, it's as broad as a lake.   In the background, in the middle of the photo, you can make out the huge dunes that spread along the coast here.

The wharf in Old Town Florence.  Neat Cape Cod buildings house seafood restaurants and small shops of all kinds that cater to the town's summer tourists.

Bridge between Florence's historic district and the extensive dune recreation area to the south.

North of Florence, the dunes gradually rise into mountains.  All afternoon, fog hung like a curtain just beyond the beach.

Twelve miles or so above Florence, the coast has become steep, rocky and forested.  This turnout is supposed to be the spot from which you can get the perfect view/photograph of the lighthouse and lightkeeper's house in the distance, but unfortunately, the mountainside was swallowed in fog when I arrived.  If you know what you're looking at, you can just barely make out the lighthouse and accompanying two small oil houses--but only just barely--and the lightkeeper's house isn't visible at all.
