Trek to Florence and
Heceta Head Lighthouse

Shoot Date: 8-26-2006

Heceta (hu-SEE-tah) Head lightkeeper's house overlooks a beach cove.  The lighthouse itself, on the cliff high above and beyond the keeper's house, is not visible in this picture.

Two large rocks (one visible at the left of the picture above)  attract local birds that gather and squawk en masse above the breaking of the waves on the beach.

The lightkeeper's house, built circa 1894, and the lighthouse a quarter mile farther up the cliff-side trail, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  Tours of the house are offered during the day; at night the house serves as a bed-and-breakfast

Behind the keeper's house, colorful barrels of flowers share space with an herb garden.

Beyond the fence, native plants flourish on the mountainsides.  I was surprised at how many intriguing wildflowers I saw blooming as I climbed the trail to the lighthouse.
