Trek to Florence and
Heceta Head Lighthouse

Shoot Date: 8-26-2006

High above the keeper's house, the lighthouse sits on the cliff face overlooking the Pacific.  Its first-order (the largest size available) Fresnel lens shines a beam of light 21 miles out to sea, said to be the brightest light along the Oregon coast.

Beside the trail above the keeper's house grow thick hedges of these bright-colored wild roses.  Sets of leaves and thorns grow close together, ready shields against whatever might try to compromise the flowers in this already harsh, salt-air environment.

The lighthouse and one of two adjacent oil houses that hold fuel for the light.  Daily tours of the 56-foot high tower are available during most months.

View of the oil houses from the base of the lighthouse.

Dramatic view looking south from the lighthouse as the sun peeks through the wispy fog.  Desktop wallpapers from this tour, including the image at left, can be found here.
